Joseph graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English from St. Francis College in New York and planned to single-handedly revive the pulp-fiction market until he married his wife, Shelly, and moved to Providence, Rhode Island. She didn't believe that being a writer would help them raise a family, so she encouraged him to buy a little diner near the local college, believing that it would become a popular hangout. It flourished and Joseph begrudgingly worked as a short-order cook while sneaking in any writing time he could at night. Five years after they got married, they had a daughter who they named Violet. Everything went swimmingly for our hero until Shelly ran off with their night cook, taking Violet with her. Since then, Joseph has been trying to juggle a job he never wanted but now feels responsible for while cramming in writing time and tracking down his wife for visitation.

He does his best not to be too grumpy about it all. Sometimes he succeeds.
